We didn't do it alone – Siffert For Assembly
Hello hello!
We ran our campaign our way, but we didn’t do it alone.
Most importantly, we had the support of you all, and of the plurality of voters in the district. But we got there with the support of countless people and organizations along the way.
In many ways, the campaign started and ended with the Village Independent Democrats. VID was where I got my start in local politics, and VID was my first endorsement. I didn’t just have VID’s logo on my literature. VID petitioned for me, which came in particularly useful when hundreds of our petitions disappeared with my campaign manager’s backpack. VID tabled for me. VID sent an extra larger mailing this year, and those extra pieces of mail made the difference in this race. But VID isn’t just the organization — VID is its members. VID members volunteered their time, donated, did photoshoots with me, hosted open houses, took me around their buildings, introduced me to their neighbors, and helped me build out my grassroots network that ultimately won this race.
But it wasn’t just VID. New York Progressive Action Network endorsed me early, vouched for my values, petitioned for me, and sent a crucial mailer for me. The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, where I’ve been a proud Board Member, not only endorsed me, but also sent a mailer that made the difference in this race. Downtown Women for Change, an incredible local organization, dramatically expanded my network in the southern part of the district and helped me hone many of my wonkiest policy ideas.
The Sunrise Movement organized and volunteered for me, giving me strong credibility on climate issues and motivating young people to participate. Unite Here Local 100 gave me credibility on labor issues and co-authored a May Day op-ed with me. TenantsPAC gave me credibility on housing issues, and Citizens Union gave me credibility on transparency issues. The Lights Out Coalition, NYCLASS, the League of Humane Voters NY, and Voters for Animal Rights cemented my status as the animal rights candidate.
Our Revolution’s endorsement gave me incredible visibility. I was approved by Planned Parenthood and Moms Demand Action. I was supported by voter guides from Jews For Racial and Economic Justice / The Jewish Vote and from Soft Power.
Two elected officials had the guts to endorse me, in the face of a lot of pressure: Emily Gallagher and Jabari Brisport. They helped me tremendously both publicly and behind-the-scenes, and I’m so grateful to them. I also had key endorsements from Marti Cummings, Tyler Hack, and Emilia Decaudin.
Each and every one of these endorsers made the difference in this race. No one runs for office on their own. Even with an incredible staff like mine, nothing would get off the ground without validators and the support of the local community.
But, ultimately, this race was won at the ballot box by the voters in District 66. I’m forever grateful to my neighbors for having faith in me.
