Allen Roskoff, President of the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club issued the following statement, “Jim Owles takes our endorsement process very seriously. Our candidates go through an intense interview process. Our concerns range from abortion rights, death penalty, LGBT equality, police brutality, tenant protections, income equality and the demand for clemency. We are proud to announce our candidates for 2016"
We made no endorsement in the 9th and 16th Congressional District primaries where Rep. Yvette Clarke and Rep. Eliot Engel and are running for re-election. They were not endorsed in part due to their failure to support "Candles for Clemency" which demands the governor issue clemencies to the elderly and infirm to prevent their having to die in prison. We will keep our attention focused on their being contested in future years.
In Manhattan’s 9th Civil Court District we strongly oppose the re-election of Civil Court Judge Lori Sattler. We also oppose her bid to be elevated to the State Supreme Court. Judge Sattler is best known for slamming a mother for having an abortion in a child custody case. Her lawyer, Emily Jane Goodman exclaimed in court " I think the very idea of the potential of using, against a woman in a child custody case, the fact that she may have had an abortion sets women’s rights and the rights of choice back in a way that I can’t imagine this court would want to be associated,” Goodman said. We agree and find an endorsement of Sattler a vote against abortion rights. For further information please see: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/mother-abortion-fare-game-custody-case-judge-article-1.1466743

* The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club believes that the Independent Democratic Caucus has caused a great deal of harm to the state’s ability to pass progressive legislation including tenant protections and rent regulations, which disproportionately impact on the working poor. We believe that the IDC are the cause of the state’s failure to pass the GENDA legislation and to outlaw Conversion Therapy of LGBT youth. To this end we will refrain from supporting any members of the Independent Democratic Caucus.
