NEW YORK -- Today, Governor Kathy Hochul granted 13 clemencies, including four commutations to currently incarcerated people in the New York State prison system and nine pardons to people in the community facing deportation. In response, Allen Roskoff, President of the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club released the following statement:

"The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club was honored to endorse and campaign for Kathy Hochul for Governor and gratified that she won. Today she took steps towards justice by granting life-saving clemencies. We’ve long supported the use of clemency as a means of ending New York’s horrible system of incarceration. The Governor’s actions today are an improvement from the previous administration and we hope to continue having the kind dialogue with her that will deliver even more justice for more people.

Today’s clemencies will reunite life partners, parents and children, and grandparents and grandchildren after decades of family separation. We’re thrilled that these four incarcerated people have a new lease on life. But there are so many others who need this opportunity, so many others who have applied for clemency and are ready to come home. We hope with all sincerity that the Governor continues to work with us so that people are released on an ongoing basis throughout the year. Her job is to give people hope, and we look forward to her doing that for far more people.”
