Press Release: Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club Announces First Endorsements in 2022 State Legislative Races

NEW YORK - The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, New York’s city-wide, progressive LGBTQ Democratic club, announced today its first endorsements in 2022 New York State legislature races. The club endorsed ten incumbents, including five members of the New York State Senate and five State Assembly Members.
Club President Allen Roskoff, co-author of the nation’s first gay rights bill stated, “We endorsed ten dedicated and effective legislators and are eager to help them win another term, so they can continue to advance progressive legislation that will benefit New Yorkers during these difficult times.”
Among the endorsed candidates were Brad Hoylman, out gay Senator from Manhattan and longtime ally to the club; Michael Gianaris, the Deputy Majority Leader of the Senate who is fighting to protect tenants from eviction following the expiration of the moratorium; Jo Anne Simon, Chair of the Committee on Ethics and Guidance and of the Commission on Legislative Ethics and a leader in securing disability rights for students; and Gustavo Rivera, Chair of the Senate Health Committee and leader in the effort to secure public health insurance.
Roskoff added, “All ten legislators have demonstrated that they hold a progressive vision for issues affecting health care, housing, criminal justice reform, needed services for the homeless and solutions for working families in these troubled times. They have been in the forefront of reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, respect and concerns of immigrants. We are proud to enthusiastically support these legislative stars and progressive champions.”
The following are the ten legislators who received the club’s endorsement at the recent meeting. The club will continue to make endorsements for other seats in the state legislature, as well as statewide races, at upcoming meetings:
