NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson is planning to run for city comptroller, according to a report.
Johnson “has printed up petitions to gather voter signatures to qualify for ballot status to run in the Democratic primary for comptroller,” sources told the New York Post.
1010 WINS has reached out to Johnson’s office for comment.
Johnson is also set to attend the Jim Owles Liberal LGBT Democratic Club’s comptroller’s forum on Saturday, the outlet reported.
“We are privileged to be the first organization in the city to host Council Speaker Johnson, a prospective candidate, along with [Harlem state] Senator [Brian] Benjamin, Council Member [Brad] Lander, and Assembly Member [Mark] Weprin,” the club’s president, Allen Roskoff, said in a statement about the forum, according to the outlet.
Johnson this past September decided not to run for mayor of New York City, saying that he had “been dealing with some personal challenges over the past few months, namely — depression.”
“I am sharing this because I know from experience the value of speaking honestly about one’s struggles,” he said in a statement at the time. “Too often mental health issues are shrouded in secrecy and stigmas, which causes people struggling with these issues to feel alone.”
