New York, NY -The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club (JOLDC) urges voters to vote YES on Proposal 1 and NO on Proposals 2 and 6.
Proposal 1 will codify equality into the state constitution, including abortion rights. Proposals 2 through 6 are an attempt by Mayor Eric Adams to weaken the checks and balances on his own power. These proposals hide nefarious goals under benign-sounding language that range from shrinking police accountability to reducing the power of the City Council to do its job.
The JOLDC is a proud coalition partner with scores of elected officials and organizations in No Power Grab NYC. Together, we can stop the mayor’s Trumpian attempts to subvert democracy in our city.
The New York Civil Liberties Union warns:
“The proposals would upend the separation of powers in City government and empower the Mayor and agencies, like the NYPD and Department of Correction, to derail the legislative process. This will make it even harder than it already is for the Council to pass laws that benefit New Yorkers and that deliver badly needed oversight and accountability. The Mayor wants to insulate the NYPD and Department of Correction – which runs the city’s jails – from checks on their power.”
At least 43 elected officials are sounding the alarm on Proposals 2 through 6, including Reps. Jerry Nadler and Nydia Velázquez, along with City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams. “I encourage voters to understand the real impact of these deceptively worded proposals and to vote ‘NO’ to preserve their voice in city government,” Speaker Adams said in a statement.
JOLDC President Allen Roskoff said: “Criminally indicted Mayor Eric Adams has shown New Yorkers again and again that he has no respect for the institutions of our local democracy. He should resign to focus on his own problems. In the meantime, New Yorkers must not give him an ounce more power when they head to the polls. Vote YES on Prop 1 and NO on everything else.”
Early voting will take place from October 26 through November 3rd. Election Day is November 5th. New voters must register to vote by October 26th to take part in this year’s general election.
