Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club endorse Jenifer Rajkumar for Sheldon Silver’s seat
The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club has endorsed Jenifer Rajkumar with 71% of the vote, for the New York 65th Assembly District, to succeed Sheldon Silver.
A prominent citywide political club, Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club is particularly known for its bold and early progressive stances.
Rajkumar is a noted civil rights lawyer, district leader, and professor at CUNY.
Club President Allen Roskoff said in a statement: “Jenifer Rajkumar will be a strong voice in Albany for reform and transparency. Ms Rajkumar has been an effective advocate for income equality, abortion rights, the LGBTQ community and an outspoken advocate in the struggle demanding Governor Cuomo exercise his power of clemency to release the elderly, infirm and others clemency worthy from needless and cruel incarceration.”
Earlier, a coalition of Latino leaders from the Lower East Side had endorsed Rajkumar for the seat vacated by Silver.
“I have worked with her over the years, and I can tell you that she stands up for everyone across the district, even during tough fights”, said David Nieves, a member of the coalition, activist and resident of Seward Park Extension. “I have seen firsthand her tenacity, hard work and guts. When we elect Jenifer to the Assembly, the Lower East Side will have a champion in Albany.”
Two voting members of the Democratic County Committee that will choose a nominee for a special election to be held in April, Nelly Quiñones and Janette Suarez, are also members of the coalition that endorsed Rajkumar.
