NEW YORK — On September 8th, Governor Kathy Hochul granted 13 clemencies, including three currently incarcerated people in the New York State prison system who will now be released. In response, Allen Roskoff, President of the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club released the following statement:

“Today Governor Hochul took additional steps towards justice by granting life-saving clemencies. We’ve long supported the use of clemency as a means of ending New York’s horrible system of incarceration and to keep families together. We thank the governor for keeping her word of granting clemencies in an ongoing manner instead of following the cruel tradition of previous governors who granted clemencies only once a year.

We share in the joy of people being able to go home and spend their lives with their families and loved ones. These clemencies also give hope to people who are presently incarcerated. Moving forward, we hope that the governor grants more clemencies as ongoing policy. Today, we praise her for taking action, showing compassion and caring about this important issue.”
