George Takei honored

George Takei was a volunteer for Adlai Stevenson, a civil rights marcher and a Vietnam War protester long before he was Sulu on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise.

The actor, on Broadway now in “Allegiance,” told members of the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, “Despite all that campaigning I did on social issues, I was silent on the one issue that was closest to me — the fact that I was gay.”

Takei, accepting an award in the Flatiron loft of Mark Green, said he finally told his husband Brad Altman they had to come out in 2005, when then-California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed same-sex marriage legislation.

“I was prepared for my career to wither,” Takei said. “What happened was the polar opposite. My career blossomed.”

Cissy (mother of Whitney) Houston and Melba Moore were also honored in front of “Arrested Development” star Jessica Walter and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” star Kathryn Erbe.

The elected officials included City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Public Advocate Tish James, Brooklyn Democratic Chairman Frank Seddio and City Council member Corey Johnson.
