NEW YORK - The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club has announced another round of endorsements in 2021 New York City races.
The endorsements include Julie Won, a candidate in the 26th Council District in Queens. “We have all been horrified recently by acts of violence directed against Asian-Americans, from Georgia to right here in New York City,” said Club President Allen Roskoff. “It is imperative that we elect dynamic young Asian-American leaders like Julie to ensure that our city government does everything possible to end this hateful prejudice.”
“It is especially important to elect a productive council member in District 26,” Mr. Roskoff continued, “where the incumbent, Jimmy Van Bramer, has been ineffective because he is so widely disliked by his colleagues. In addition, he does not share the values of our progressive organization.”
The club also endorsed Felicia Singh in Council District 32. Mr. Roskoff praised Ms. Singh for speaking out forcefully against the Mayor’s inadequate plan to help indebted taxi drivers. Mr. Roskoff noted that, “Ms. Singh’s father is a long-time cab driver, and she and her parents are in danger of losing their home due to his inability to pay off loans for a taxi medallion. The shameful medallion financing system has taken unfair advantage of taxi drivers, and Ms. Singh will be the passionate and knowledgeable advocate they need to reform it and provide relief to those it has harmed. Our members are also confident that she will show the same determination on behalf of LGBTQ and other important issues.”
The club endorsed Eric Gonzalez for reelection as Brooklyn District Attorney. Mr. Roskoff said, “District Attorney Gonzalez has proven himself to be an exemplary DA, one of the most progressive in the country, and we are proud to endorse him for another term.”
For Staten Island Borough President, the club selected Lorie Honor, who Mr. Roskoff called, “Staten Island’s best hope to elect a progressive Borough President.” In Brooklyn City Council District 40, the club chose Rita Joseph, who Mr. Roskoff said, “Would best serve progressive values and the LGBTQ community;” and in Council District 46 in Brooklyn, Shirley Paul. Mr. Roskoff said, “We should wholeheartedly support Ms. Paul due to her long-time experience in progressive politics and advocacy.” In Council District 49 in Brooklyn, the club’s nod went to Amoy Barnes, who Mr. Roskoff described as “dynamic, energetic and outspoken on issues important to those of us in the forefront of the civil rights movement.”
