Wayne has been a long-time political activist since the anti-Vietnam movement of the 1960's and 1970's. He became a gay activist in May of 1971, when he joined the Gay Activist Alliance of New York. Sunday was elected secretary of GAA in May 1973.
In subsequent years, Wayne was a member of the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights, whose principle objective was the passage of the gay rights bill in the New York City Council, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in employment, housing, and public accommodations. Sunday helped write the constitution of CLGR along with Fred Goldhaber shortly after the coalition was formed.
Wayne was also a member of CSLDC (Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee) in 1977-1978, serving as secretary of that group in 1977. He was a member of the steering committee of the March onWashingtonfor Lesbian & Gay Rights in 1979 and 1987.
A long-time political activist, Wayne is currently a member of the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, Stonewall Democrats, and Brooklyn Democrats for Change. Wayneis also a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
